What it takes to be a Utah general contractor
Posted on September 14th, 2011

A general contractor works with a developer or builder to provide the necessary components to complete the contracted portion of a job. Subcontractors are typically hired by the general contractor to accomplish this. The general contractor prepares a bid for the entire job based on the plans and specs, and if awarded the job, will be responsible for acquiring all materials, permits, inspections and subcontractors, plus be aware of and compliant with all necessary building codes needed to see the project(s) to completion to the developers satisfaction.

There are a number of ways to become a general contractor; many career colleges offer a 2- or 4-year degree in construction science, but most began working as skilled laborers or carpenters. Once you decide to do more than irregular piece-work or handyman jobs, its time to consider the regulations that will help you become someone a client will want to hire. Obtaining a Utah contractors license simply requires you be over 18 years of age and have a current business license. Beyond this, you will have to have the ability to manage your projects and your subcontractors, be able to estimate time and materials to complete the job, and budget to bring it in for the amount you bid. You will need to understand blueprints, and the requirements of the project. And finally, you will have to pass the Utah contractors license exam.
