Utah's Economy Best in Nation
Utah has the best state economy in the country. According to a report published
Monday by WalletHub, a national financial research and consulting organization,
Utah earned the top overall score on state economies, as well as second place
for "economic activity" and "economic health," and fourth
place for "innovation potential."
So what does that mean for construction? Investments made in
software companies, biomed companies, computer and semiconductor companies, and
aerospace manufacturing, mean plenty of work for contractors, who must design
and build not only commercial space, but homes and other residential spaces for
all of the employees attracted to the state. In addition, road construction is
big business for Utah. The I-15 reconstruction peaked at 1,600 workers when the
housing market took a hit during the Great Recession.
"It's in our DNA as a people — we're a very entrepreneurial state,"
said Natalie Gochnour, associate dean of the David Eccles School of Business
and director of the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah.
And that's good news for everyone, including contractors looking to start their
own firms.
