Stay Safe: Prevent Heat Exhaustion/Heat Stroke
Utah's climate is unique in that we can experience extreme conditions during
both the winter and the summer seasons. In Southern Utah, daytime temperatures
can reach well above 100 degrees during the months of June, July, and August.
But the Wasatch Front is no stranger to high temperatures either, with temps
regularly in the nineties.
That's why it is important take
steps to ensure you and your employees don't suffer from heat exhaustion or
heat stroke.
Here are some tips to help remind you:
- Drink water every 15 minutes, even if you are not thirsty.
- Rest in the shade to cool down.
- Wear a hat and light-colored clothing.
- Learn the signs of heat illness and what to do in an emergency.
- Keep an eye on fellow workers.
- "Easy does it" on your first days of work in the heat. You need to get used to it.
Working in full sunlight can increase heat index values by 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this in mind and plan additional precautions for working in these conditions.
Keep in mind OSHA's campaign of Water. Rest. Shade. These simple steps will help everyone keep their cool this summer.
