So, you want to be a licensed general contractor in Utah
Posted on September 12th, 2011

The truth is, many contractors start out doing DIY work around the house and helping friends and family with fix-it jobs. They realize they have a real aptitude for it, whether its electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, or any of the dozens of other specialties of the trade, and decide to make it their lifes work. Although red tape can be a time-consuming pain, its a necessary part of the career, and how you keep yourself and your customers protected.

Most states require that you pass a written test on things like construction and/or contracting law; some even require a college degree for licensing. Utah is one of only two U.S. states that require that you have 6 continuing education credits, 3 in core training and 3 in pro training, in order to maintain your license. In addition, anyone applying for a Utah Contractor's License must take the Utah Business and Law exam. The test covers state and federal laws, accounting procedures, construction trade licensing acts, taxes, mechanic lien laws, OSHA requirements, risk management, and other general business law questions.

All of which is pretty far away from the specific knowledge it takes to be a successful contractor, but its a requirement for the license. And far too many people have been burned byunlicensed contractors, and typically ask for your license information so theycan verify you are indeed licensed by the state. You might be surprised to hear that almost everyone needs a little help to get ready for and pass this critical exam.
