Are you familiar with the old Granite Furniture delivery warehouse in Sugar House? Developers are proposing a plan to renovate the building and turn it into a 10-story residential complex. The 100-foot tall building would house 492 apartments.
While some people have objected to the height and design of the structure itself, most residents are more concerned about traffic and parking. The community council appears to be concerned about the lack of mixed-use space, which would include residential, retail, and office space. The idea was formally proposed earlier this week and the council now has 45 days to seek input from the public.
Regardless of the outcome, the new proposal reflects the trend of the growing demand for apartments in urban areas. Multi-unit residential buildings are popping up all across the Wasatch front, from Ogden to Springville. Last spring, the Salt Lake Tribune reported that the demand for apartments was outpacing the supply. Fox 13 reported that apartment construction has been a boon to the Utah economy. This is just one of the many factors overall contributing to the robust construction industry in Utah.
