Innovative Equipment In Use by UDOT
Posted on October 14th, 2015

Anyone who has driven I-15 between Salt Lake and Utah counties in the last year is undoubtedly aware of the major road construction project going on at Point of the Mountain. The large-scale project has caused delays, closures, congestion, and any number of commute-related headaches.

UDOT recently brought in a new piece of equipment that should help ease some of those problems. A new conveyor belt bridge spanning the freeway carries concrete from one side of the freeway to the other. "We're reducing about 15,000 estimated truck trips from the batch plant to the center construction zone," said Point Project Director Tim Rose.

The new bridge should also help speed up the project's timeline. In a matter of minutes, the concrete is dumped directly onto the conveyor belt, carried over the freeway to the concrete trucks, which then take it right to the paver. The belt also enhances safety for workers and reduces emissions and fuel consumption.
