Growing Salt Lake City
Posted on February 16th, 2017
Salt Lake has a new five-year affordable housing plan, and officials are calling it Growing Salt Lake City. It has been sixteen years since the last action was taken to move toward construction of affordable housing. The plan was announced earlier this month and focuses on seven goals. The goals came about in response to two statistics.

According to Mayor Jackie Biskupski, nearly half of renters in Salt Lake City are considered cost burdened. That means that their rent payments account for thirty percent of their income. For nearly a quarter of the renting population, 50% of their income goes to rent, making them severely cost burdened.

According to Fox13 News, the mayor, leaders from the Department of Community and Neighborhoods, and the Housing Authority of Salt Lake came together to announce the new action plan. The seven goals include:

1. Updates to zoning codes
2. Preservation of long-term affordable housing
3. Establishing a significant funding source
4. Stabilizing low income tenants
5. Innovation in design
6. Partnerships in housing
7. Equitability and fair housing.

The next step for the team is to accept public feedback on the plan, which they are currently accepting.
