Kudos to a quick-acting Cedar City construction crew who used their water truck to douse flames ignited by firecrackers on Wednesday. A citizen noticed smoke billowing over his neighbor's fence from an adjacent field. Firecrackers lit by teens ignited tinder dry brush.
The citizen and the construction crew were able to put out the flames before fire crews could arrive, effectively saving the wooden fences and homes in the area. A spokesperson for the fire department noted that firecrackers are indeed illegal in the state of Utah for this very reason. They are wrapped in paper and can ignite the many dry grasses of Utah quickly.
We are glad the construction crew remained safe and we acknowledge them for their service and bravery. They were working on the new state bank building, less than a block away from the scene where the fire began.
