A Little Something to Think About
Posted on January 17th, 2017
As contractors, we often think of safety in terms of OSHA regulations and guidelines. Do we have the proper equipment? Have we received the right training? Is the work area such to prevent accidents? Basically, the focus is on construction worker and work site safety.

But what about when the project is done - especially in the case of spec or model homes? You'll have agents and other sales people or representatives there, often alone. NAHB reported on a woman today, who is one of those people. A couple stopped by her sales office and asked her to take them on a tour of one of the homes. Something felt "wrong" to her, so she declined. Later, that same couple ended up carjacking another sales agent in another neighborhood. The woman, Lynn Parker Davis, knew something had to be done. So she invented a new device, called NterNow.

The device is a secure, keyless entry system that allows buyers to call in or use a mobile app to gain access to homes within a community. NterNow is a patented 12-button lock installed on the front door of a builder’s spec homes. Prospective buyers interested in touring a home can call in to a third-party verification system using a number provided on the lock, or log in with the product’s mobile app to provide verifiable identifying information and the property address.

The innovative thing about it is that it addresses an area of workplace safety that is less-often thought of in the construction industry. It also allows a company to capture lead information, which is an added bonus.

NterNow is making its debut at the International Builders Show this week. But even if you're not interested in the device itself, it should get you thinking about the safety of your non-construction employees.
